Italian Government establishes ad-hoc National Cybersecurity Agency

22 June 2021
On June 14, 2021, Law-Decree No. 82 was published in the Italian Official Journal. The decree contains urgent provisions concerning cybersecurity, the national cybersecurity program, and the establishment of a national agency for cybersecurity. The creation of the Italian cybersecurity agency is a very important milestone.

The new agency, governed by Articles 5, 6, and 7 of the relevant law-decree, will be in charge of functions previously vested in a variety of bodies, including the Ministry for Economic Development and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. Those functions include the national strategy for cybersecurity, management of cybersecurity certifications, and promotion and cooperation related to cybersecurity policy. Also, it will act as national competent authority and single point of contact. The agency will also host the special department for cybersecurity (Nucleo per la cybersicurezza), designed to support the President of the Council of Ministers in the prevention and management of emergencies and crises.
