Portolano Cavallo, the leading full-service Italian law firm in the Digital-Media-Tech and Life Sciences-Healthcare sectors, known for its work in highly complex and cutting-edge matters, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeremy Maltby as a partner. Based in Washington, D.C., Jeremy will reinforce the firm’s U.S. presence and cross-border practice. Portolano Cavallo has maintained an office in New York since 2015.

Jeremy brings more than 25 years of legal experience in private practice and government, including as Managing Partner of the Washington, D.C. office of O’Melveny & Myers, Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, and Senior counsel and Special Assistant to President Barack Obama in the White House Counsel’s Office.  A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School, and a former law clerk to the late Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter, Jeremy is recognized for his work in appellate and Supreme Court matters, complex civil litigation, white-collar investigations, trials, and regulatory enforcement, often with cross-border aspects.  Having lived in Rome and represented many U.S. clients in matters related to Italy, Jeremy Maltby is fluent in Italian and has significant experience with the Italian legal system.

At Portolano Cavallo, Jeremy will advise U.S. companies investing or operating in Italy on regulatory risk, due diligence, internal investigations, compliance and complex litigation including with respect to white collar crime, anti-corruption, anti-money laundering, sanctions, and data privacy.

Jeremy’s stellar track record, combined with his deep understanding of regulatory frameworks and cultural nuances, makes him an ideal partner for our U.S.-Italy cross-border practice,” said Francesco Portolano, co-founder of Portolano Cavallo. “Jeremy’s expertise, our 25-year focus on U.S. clients and our top-tier full-service capability will bring unique benefits to U.S. clients in their litigation, white collar crime, and investigation matters in Italy.

This is a pivotal moment for cross-border legal strategy,” said Jeremy Maltby. “Huge opportunities are emerging for investment in both the U.S. and Europe. At the same time, growing regulatory and enforcement complexity, together with geopolitical risk, is creating significant challenges on both sides of the Atlantic.  In this environment, clients need counsel who can move seamlessly between the two systems, and Portolano Cavallo is perfectly positioned to meet that need.

Portolano Cavallo is Italy’s go-to firm for Digital-Media-Tech and Life Sciences-Healthcare, combining sector leadership, top-tier full-service capability, and cross-border perspectives to deliver best-in-class U.S.-Italy counsel.
